FV, Re the CX3400. I am surprised at the lack of response. Try Google. If you check the 'Sold' list on Ebay you will see that patience can get you one for less than $70. Try at that sort of price.

FV, I like mah have the dcx2496. It does about $200. more things than the 3400. If the 3400 is in your budget get it and go three way. By adding a sub your whole system will play LOUDER ! With less stain on your 15's, they may last longer being recones. (I have a old 421 with a Waldom recone which I haven't destroyed yet) And by going all ALTEC your system will increase in value.

Personally haven't auditioned any stock or modified ones, but FWIW, I've read numerous posts over the years that the stock models are audibly noisy when used in HE systems in HIFI apps, requiring significant upgrades and that BSS OmniDrive or better is the long term way to go, though there's DIYers using SoundForge? or other [near] free software, so maybe a way to get sufficient quality with relatively little cash outlay.

I believe Behringer addressed some very early problems. My DCX sure is quiet.

Be aware that Behringer sells a stripped-down version, the DCX2496 LE, as well as the DCX2496. Visible check, LE has 2 buttons at the LHS of the front panel instead of 3.

Mine runs quite too. I really haven't noticed any noise. Besides how are you going to know what's on or blown without a little hiss and hum ?
How to know without hiss and hum? Just listen to it. I have a Carver C11 preamp with the BillD mods done to it. Even with the gains turned to the max with no input it sounds like my system is shut down. Music flows out of an inky blackness, a real treat. I use this in my all Carver SS setup.
The first time I tested it for noise I had my ear to the drivers and walked back to my gear rack sure that something was turned off, it's that quiet.
